Why Did This S.C. Officer Kill An Unarmed Man For Resisting Arrest?
Nobody wins in this scenario. Walter Scott has lost his life. The Scott family has lost a loved one. If convicted, Michael Slager will lose his freedom as his wife raises their children—who stand to grow up with an absent father—on her own. Prayers abound for both families.
This issue has already become a "black and white" thing in the media and amongst protesters, but may glaze over the real problem at hand.
Yes, Walter Scott resisted arrest, but why did he pay the ultimate price for doing so? Why did the officer resort to such excessive force? If he had to draw is service weapon and fire, couldn't he have fired those 8 shots at his legs? Are officers trained to immediately shoot-to-kill in these situations? After he wounded Mr. Scott, why did he cuff him instead of trying to save his life?
Police deal with the worst of the worst of humankind on a daily basis, but, seriously, how can we keep the future Walter Scott's from losing their life when, judging by this video, it could have easily been avoided?
